Forbes Furniture Port Lincoln
was opened by Sandra and David Forbes on 15th September 1983 in it’s
current location, catering for lower eyre peninsula with a medium to
better range of furniture and is now being managed by Mark & Kelly
Forbes who started purchasing the business in 2003 with the
intention of continuing on the family business for many years.
There have been many changes in the industry since the early 80’s.
Originally the majority of manufacturers represented were South
Australian companies that were recognised Australia wide for their
excellent quality. Unfortunately companies such as Noblet, Macrob,
Taminga & Marshall Furniture which were all large manufacturers have
closed down and the industry seemed to explode into a huge number of
small “cottage” style manufacturers producing radia pine, colonial
style furniture.
Today we seem to be seeing the demise of these manufacturers and the
larger more successful are sending Australian and New Zealand pine
and Victorian Ash to Chinese factories with their staff to train
them in the quality and style of furniture for our market. The
manufacturer then imports in container lots and has become a
distributor to the industry.
It is becoming increasing difficult for small independent operators
to exist in furniture retailing. Forbes Furniture are members of the
Homemakers Group, which is the largest marketing group in Australia
with in excess of 120 stores. The group consists of independently
owned operators with the advantage of group marketing Australia wide
and are able to purchase in container lots as well as direct
importing. The result of this is the ability to pass on the savings
to the public and be more than competitive with the large
corporations currently infiltrating the South Australian industry.
Forbes Furniture has grown from a total of 3 employees to a total of
15 including casuals. They are currently the largest specialty
furniture emporium on lower Eyre Peninsula.
Forbes Furniture also operate their own furniture removal business
and cart all of their stock from their Adelaide depot to Pt Lincoln
weekly.
Since inception they have operated a free delivery service in Pt
Lincoln, within 100km’s as well as all locations on route to
Adelaide. They are also able to arrange delivery of furniture
Australia wide. |
